History & Importance

The Wat Phra Kaew was constructed in 1782 as part of the Grand Palace when King Rama I shifted Thailand’s capital from Thonburi to Bangkok. The temple is now extremely significant for Buddhists, who believe it brings great prosperity and fortune to the country.

The Emerald Buddha

The Emerald Buddha is a small statue made from a single piece of jade and was discovered in Chiang Rai, in the 15th century. It now sits within the temple’s ordination hall and is clothed in gold and diamonds. The statue is often dressed in seasonal attire which is changed thrice a year by the King in a grand ritual.
